She knew the exact moment Michael noticed his packed duffle bag by the front door. His expression registered surprise, then a spark of anger lit his eyes, and his jaw tensed.

“What’s going on?” Hands on his hips, he looked down at her with one of his more intimidating glares.

“I agreed to your staying over for one night, but I can take care of myself from this point on.” The words came out pretty calm, but her nerves were raw. If her heart pounded any harder, it would jump right out of her chest.

“Yeah, you did a bang-up job that night you got carjacked.” His words stung, and he didn’t seem to care.

“You can’t stay here, Michael.”

“Why not?”

“It’s just not a good idea.”

“Why isn’t it?” He scanned her face as if he was trying to read her mind, and she sincerely hoped he couldn’t. Her words were stumbling and she didn’t know what to say next.

“Because the sheriff will make sure I’m protected.” She knew this was a lie, but threw it out there anyway.

“Yeah, sure he will. There’s no money in his budget, Anne. No protection from his staff. Not in the cards. So you’ve got me. I’m your protection.”

“No. I’m not ready for you to stay here.” It was another lie, but she was running out of phony excuses for him to stay away.

“Why not?”

“I’m not ready to get involved. I thought I was, but I'm not.” Damn. Why did she say that?

“Oh, really, you seemed more than ready to get involved in the living room a couple of hours ago.” Michael was livid. He stepped toward her and she stepped back. "Remember, I asked you if you were sure?"

“Well, that was . . .” God, she was tripping over her thoughts again.

“Oh, and don’t forget the shower, then your bed. Yeah, I’d say you were ready to get involved those times, too.”

“Michael, please just leave. We need to take things a little slower. We can’t see each other for a while.”

“How long is ‘a while’?”

“Listen. You’re a prosecutor. I know there are probably rules about you seeing someone who plays a role in an active investigation. So I don’t think we should see each other until after Rachel’s killer is caught and you’ve prosecuted him.

“Seriously? Do you know how fucking long that could take?” He was incredulous. It sometimes took years to apprehend and prosecute a killer.

“I want you to send him away, Michael, so he can’t hurt anyone else. You can’t let him get off on some technicality. That just can’t happen."

"Anne, you are so much more than some technicality." Michael protested.

"I need you to do this for me.” Anne knew she was right. He was a pit bull in court. She knew the killer would be put away for a long, long time if Michael had anything to do with it. She also knew if the killer got away on a technicality because of something he did, it might destroy both of them.

A lone tear streamed down her cheek and she quickly wiped it away.
